Edward’s Story
Edward D. Viner joined the Knowles Board of Trustees in 2008. Formerly, Chief of Medicine at Cooper University Hospital, a position he held for 20 years (1987—2006), Dr. Viner now holds the position of Professor of Medicine and Senior Advisor to the Dean at the Cooper Medical School of Rowan University (CMSRU). Dr. Viner continues to practice, specializing in internal medicine, hematology and medical oncology.
Dr. Viner graduated from Harvard College, Cum Laude, and received his medical degree from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, where he was elected to the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society. He completed his residency in internal medicine, followed by a two-year fellowship in hematology/oncology at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania.
Prior to assuming the position of Cooper’s Chief of Medicine, Dr. Viner spent twenty-two years in the practice of internal medicine and hematology/oncology at Pennsylvania Hospital where he was also head of the Section of Hematology/Oncology; Director of Fellowship Training in these disciplines; and Co-Director of the Oncology Research Laboratory. Dr. Viner has received funding from the National Cancer Institute and has served on a number of editorial boards and national committees. He has authored numerous medical publications and book chapters.
Dr. Viner has also been the recipient of numerous awards and honors, including the Philadelphia Caring Award in 1984 and Laureateship from the American College of Physicians in 2003. Subsequently he was elected to Mastership in the College. In 2006, the Edward D. Viner Chair of Medicine was created at Cooper. In 2009, he was named Honorary First Dean of the new Cooper Medical School of Rowan University. He has regularly been on regional and national lists of Best Doctors, and in June 2012, Dr. Viner received the prestigious Strittmatter Award from the Philadelphia County Medical Society for his career-long contributions to medicine. In 2015, the medical school presented Dr. Viner with a lifetime Achievement Award for Humanism in Medicine “for a lifetime of exemplary humanistic patient care and dedication to medical education.”
