My philosophy about teaching is informed by the idea that my role as a science teacher is to be a ‘guide on the side’—I am the facilitator of learning, not the source of information.”

Why Science

“A student who successfully learns science in my classroom will be able to answer questions and design solutions to meet problems they face later in life, whether in the broader society or their careers. I decided to become a science teacher, not because I expect all of my students to necessarily become scientists or engineers, but because I recognize the importance of developing the aforementioned skills for them to apply in every setting of their lives, as well as the importance of scientific literacy for all members of our society.”

Professional Experience

During his undergraduate studies at the University of California, Irvine, Dimitri completed an internship with UCI Applied Innovation, an organization that connects the research discoveries from UC Irvine with the Orange County (CA) business community. As an intern in the prototyping lab, he helped community members turn their ideas into physical prototypes by leading training for rapid prototyping and manufacturing techniques, including 3D printing and 3D scanning, computer-controlled milling, laser cutting, and electronic hardware and software (Arduino).

Before transitioning to a career in education, Dimitri worked as a plumbing systems designer for two years at LPA, an integrated design firm. In this role, he led plumbing system design and oversaw construction of domestic cold and hot water, recycled water, natural gas, sanitary sewer, and stormwater systems on commercial buildings and K–12 projects. Additionally, he coordinated sustainable design solutions within a multi-disciplinary team of architects, engineers, and project managers.

Dimitri will begin his first year of teaching at Woodbridge High School during the 2021–2022 school year.

Volunteer Experience

In years past, Dimitri volunteered as a camp counselor at Camp Erin Orange County, a bereavement camp for youth grieving the loss of a loved one. He was the first camper to return as a counselor, providing support for a group of adolescent campers.

Hobbies

Dimitri loves learning languages. He is currently studying Spanish, with the goal of being fluent in all romance languages. Additionally, he enjoys playing Magic: The Gathering, a card game, with family and friends.
