Teachers should prepare our nation’s young people to be whatever they want to be.”
Emily’s Story
Teaching Discipline
Mathematics
Why Mathematics
“I love the beauty in patterns and multiple ways of reasoning. Math offers a space for students to practice driving the problem solving process, using all their prior knowledge and working with their peers as resources to model solutions to unique problems. This is a skill that is beneficial in any space, not just math!”
Professional Experience
Emily started her career teaching at San Lorenzo High School for two years, and now is teaching at Berkeley High School in Berkeley, CA. Her current assignment is with the Universal 9th Grade program, where all of Emily’s students are in the same “hive” in which they share the same math, English, physics, and ethnic studies teachers. Emily is also the Berkeley High math department’s union representative for the Berkeley Federation of Teachers.
For the 2024-2025 school year, Emily is on maternity leave, but plans to return to the classroom in Fall 2025.
Hobbies
Emily loves spending time outdoors with her husband, dog, and son. Emily is also a big fan of reality tv, especially the Bachelor franchise. Ask Emily about her Knowles Story Slam story about stalking one of the former Bachelor leads when he was running the San Francisco marathon!
