Qiwen Zheng

I want my students to remember that they can accomplish anything! Many students I have encountered hate science coming into ninth grade biology, and I want to change that mentality and bring more girls and minorities to STEM!

Qiwen’s Story

Teaching Discipline

Biology

Why Biology

I chose Biology because it is the one discipline that brought joy and life to me through high school. Biology allowed me to showcase my curiosity, which I could not do in other subjects. My learning of life continues to engage me in current topics of conversation, from understanding why my hair is extra grassy in some environments to understanding bacteria evolution, which is essential to understanding super gonorrhea.

Professional Experience

Qiwen has taught informally throughout her college career, as a tutor for AP Biology, Environmental Science, and Mandarin. She also completed her student teaching as a ninth grade Biology teacher at a high school in the Bay Area. Outside of school Qiwen volunteers at an organization called AFAE, where she helps create programming for students with all abilities.

Qiwen will start her first year of teaching at Rise Kohyang High School in Koreatown, Los Angeles, California, in the 2024-2025 school year.

Hobbies

Outside the classroom Qiwen loves to create different types of art, and is also a nail tech.
