Rebecca Guarino

There have been too many data meetings, curriculum meetings, or problem-solving meetings without students’ voices at the table.”

Rebecca’s Story

Teaching Discipline

Geometry, Algebra 2, Ethnomathematics, Statistics & Injustice

Why Mathematics

“I grew up loving math because of its puzzle like nature. I always felt like my peers did not enjoy math the same way I did. I’ve always thought we need better math teachers so I’ve tried to be just that – a good math educator. Everyday I strive to create a space of collaboration and community where students of all different identities can play with mathematics and feel like a math person.”

Professional Experience

Rebecca taught Geometry at South Bronx Preparatory for her first 5 years of teaching. She then joined the Manhattan Village Academy community where she serves as a mathematics teacher, restorative justice team member and data lead specialist. Additionally Rebecca works part time as a Coach Analyst with the Cultivate Belonging Collaborative Team at University of Michigan. Rebecca is a Math for America Master teacher where she leads professional development and learns from other NYC STEM teachers. Lastly, Rebecca still engages as a senior fellow with Knowles as a course design team member and inquiry coach.

Rebecca is excited to share that she is working with other educators nationally to develop ethnomathematics based lessons, inspired by student experiences, that are shared globally on www.ourmathroots.com.

Hobbies

Rebecca enjoys spending time with her nieces and nephews, road tripping and “van life” in her Subaru Outback with her partner and pup, marathon training in Riverside Park and playing board games with the fam.
