Teachers wear many hats in society and need to be more than just instructors. We need to be mentors, role models, and advocates for our students. Oftentimes we get to bring a new perspective to students and it really can shape what mindset they have as they grow up and develop their own ideas and mental frameworks.”
Rohan’s Story
Teaching Discipline
Mathematics
Why Mathematics
“Math and I have had a few ups and downs over time, but I think that’s what keeps drawing me back to it. It’s not something that I ever feel that I’ve completely understood, and there’s always more to discover, even in something at a basic level. Now that I know how exciting math can be, I want to be able to share that with my students, many of whom, probably like me, dislike math, or feel they are not good at it.”
Professional Experience
Rohan had a variety of formative experiences around teaching while in high school and college including working with students with disabilities at a school in India, recent Syrian refugees in Belgium teaching them French and English, and middle schoolers in an AVID-style program in San Jose.
Rohan began his formal teaching career in the Fremont Union High School District in the 2017-2018 school year as a math teacher. He currently works as a PD provider and new teacher coach in the district, serving as an induction coach for new teachers, as well as coaching veteran teachers and providing professional development including a workshop on coaching and a racial identity-based affinity group for staff members of color.
Hobbies
Rohan enjoys cooking and baking, using it as an artistic outlet to explore his identity as being Indian American. He also really enjoys solving escape rooms.
