From October 22–23, 2019, the 2019 New Jersey Science Convention will take place at the Princeton Marriott at Forrestal in Princeton, New Jersey. Visit booth #54 in the Alexander Ballroom to learn about how the Knowles Teacher Initiative supports science teachers locally and nationally.

Additionally, four Knowles staff members will deliver four presentations. On Tuesday, October 22 from 8:00 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. in Lowrie, Knowles Program Officer Katey Shirey will present a session—Introduction to Engineering Design for Science Instruction—based on the Knowles Academy course, Engaging Math & Science Students in Engineering Design. During her session, attendees will complete an engineering design challenge and work together to outline the engineering design process they used, then compare and contrast those steps to the NGSS science and engineering practices.

Also on Tuesday, from 10:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. in Wilson, Knowles Program officer Joyce Lin will present a session—Exploring Opportunities to Learn Through Science Tasks—based on the Knowles Academy course, Designing Instructional Tasks to Increase Student Engagement and Learning in Science. During her session, attendees will analyze science tasks for features that support varied learning opportunities for students to learn content, and develop guides to assess these learning opportunities.

On Wednesday, October 23 from 10:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. in Witherspoon, Knowles Program Officers Michele Cheyne and Anna Monteiro will provide a high-level overview of Using Effective Group Work to Maximize Learning for All Students, a Knowles Academy course, in their presentation—Increasing Opportunities for Equitable Access in Group Work for All Students. During their session, attendees will experience strategies to equalize learning by improving collaboration and increasing participation for students engaged in 3D lessons.

Also on Wednesday, from 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m. in Witherspoon, Knowles Program Officer Katey Shirey will present a session—Integrated-STEM Curriculum for Grades 9, 10, and 11–Resources and Reflections—a presentation based on her work facilitating Knowles Academy course, Engaging Math & Science Students in Engineering Design. During her session, attendees will explore Knowles’ innovative, teacher-developed, three-year, core sciences STEM course based on the Global STEM Challenges Program.
