Knowles Fellow, Allison Espinosa, Receives Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching

Moorestown, N.J., November 22, 2019 – The Knowles Teacher Initiative today announced that Knowles Senior Fellow Alison Espinosa was the third Knowles Fellow to receive the Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching. Ms. Espinosa became a Knowles Fellow in 2006 and is currently teaching mathematics at Highland High School, Salt Lake City, Utah. 

The Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching (PAEMST) is the highest recognition that a kindergarten through 12th grade science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and/or computer science teacher may receive for outstanding teaching. Presidential Awardees receive a certificate signed by the President of the United States; a trip to Washington D.C. to attend a series of recognition events and professional development opportunities; and a $10,000 award from the National Science Foundation. The awards for which were announced on October 15, 2019

Awardees also join an active network of outstanding educators from throughout the nation. Awardees reflect the expertise and dedication of the Nation’s teaching corps, and they demonstrate the positive impact of excellent teachers on student achievement.

“I am honored and humbled to be among this distinguished group,”  most recent award recipient, Alison Espinosa, said. “I thank my colleagues and mentors at the Knowles Teacher Initiative for supporting my professional growth and challenging me to become a more effective educator. I also thank my students for reminding me why the work that we do is so important.” 

Ms. Espinosa is the third Knowles Fellow to receive this award, joining Laura Darnall of Goodlettsville, Tennessee (2015 Awardee) and Bradford Hill of Mountainside High School in Beaverton, Oregon (2013 Awardee).
