Our small steps of progress in the classroom are a journey in our teaching practice. Where we plan to be as teachers depends on how we look back and take the next steps.”

Christy’s Story

Teaching Discipline

Biology

Why Biology

“Biology has always come easily to me. I loved labs and setting up experiments, which led me to working in a research lab in college. My love for sharing how and what I did with others led me to pursue science education as a career.”

Professional Experience

For nine months, Christy worked as a staff research associate at the University of California, Los Angeles Department of Pediatrics: Infectious Disease. In this role, she participated in HIV clinical research studies involving infants, children, and mothers. Additionally, she managed specimens by organizing them physically and virtually, and processed clinical research samples, such as whole blood for plasma and peripheral blood mononuclear cells.

Christy will begin her second year of teaching at Ulysses S. Grant High School during the 2021–2022 school year.

Volunteer Experience

As an AmeriCorps member, Christy worked with City Year Los Angeles to provide more than 1,700 hours of direct, physical, and transformative service at the 122nd Street Elementary School in Willowbrook, CA. While at the school, she assisted fifth-grade students with English and math literacy through in-class support, academic interventions, and after school programming.

Christy enjoys making lists, sewing, making stickers, and rewatching soap operas.
