As Knowles staff, I am excited to support math and science teachers during the critical, initial years of their career, while they learn to use their content knowledge, along with equitable instructional practices, to increase student learning.”

Gina’s Story

Before joining Knowles, Gina spent 14 years at the Early College Alliance @ Eastern Michigan University, where she served as the math department chair and a lead teacher. While there, she focused on demystifying math instruction for students and families to bridge the gap between high school and university math courses and removing systemic barriers to mathematical and STEM courses for students historically excluded from STEM and post-secondary education. Gina continues this work with community organizations as a math advisor and coach to ensure students are supported through their educational experience. Prior to working at the Early College Alliance, Gina created and taught the regular and honors sixth-grade math curriculum at Greenhills School in Ann Arbor, Michigan.

Gina is a National Board Certified Teacher (NBCT) in Adolescent and Young Adult Mathematics and has implemented candidate support, advocacy and outreach programs throughout Michigan, and organized the MI NBCT Summit. She has also served as the president of Learning Forward Michigan and is a Teach Plus and America Achieves Teaching Fellow.

Gina’s research interests include Black girls’ mathematical experiences in K–12 and post-secondary mathematics, equitable math instruction for students and teachers, increasing society’s understanding of teaching as a profession, and removing math as a barrier to people achieving their goals.

Gina holds a Bachelor of Science in chemical engineering from California State Polytechnic University, Pomona; a Master of Science in chemical engineering from the University of Michigan; and a Doctor of Philosophy in educational leadership from Eastern Michigan University.

In her spare time, Gina enjoys biking, kayaking, cooking, and playing board games.
